Top Takeaways from FNCE 2024: Innovations and Insights from the World's Largest Nutrition Conference

FNCE 2024 Conference

I just got back from spending the last few days in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo (FNCE), sponsored by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. FNCE,  (pronounced "fency"), is the world's largest meeting of food and nutrition experts, bringing together the latest research, new product launches and thought-provoking learning sessions to shine light on the future of nutrition. FNCE focuses on education and innovation, covering a broad range of topics that impact health and wellness, from clinical nutrition to food policy and public health. It's also a wonderful place to meet fellow registered dietitians, diet technicians, students, and leaders in the field.

This was my first time attending and it did not disappoint! I left feeling re-energized and re-focused, inspired in my role current role as an in-patient clinical dietitian as well as a new media dietitian/blogger!

Top Trends Spotted at FNCE 2024:

Walking around the expo floor, hearing from poster presenters and attending learning session, I picked up on a few key trends I'm predicting we will continue to see role out over the upcoming year.

Embracing AI

The future of nutrition, and the world in general, is undoubtedly being shaped by advancements in AI and technology. Learning from the convenience of telehealth, we've seen advancements in AI-driven meal planning to predictive health analytics, tools that are making nutrition counseling more efficient and tailored to individual needs. With clients increasingly seeking convenience and personalization, incorporating AI into our practice allows dietitians new ways to connect with clients, provide more precise recommendations and better monitor client progress.

However, while technology offers exciting possibilities, the human connection and clinical expertise of a registered dietitian remains irreplaceable. Embracing AI to enhance, not replace, our work will be essential for staying relevant in this evolving field.

Protein Remains Number One

Protein continued to dominate the nutrition and marketing landscape as the top macro consumers and brands alike are focused on. With the increase of GLP-1 agonists and a growing emphasis on satiety and muscle preservation, companies are packing more protein into everyday products. Chobani introduced a new yogurt line boasting 20 grams of protein per serving, Banza launched protein-packed waffles with 10 grams per serving, and Wilde rolled out protein chips offering 13 grams per bag. The demand for high-protein options shows no signs of slowing down, as consumers continue to prioritize this essential nutrient in their diets. IsoPure showcased an innovative way to incorporate whey protein isolate into our diets by sampling an unflavored protein powder mixed into ranch dip and hummus. This demonstration highlighted how easily we can enhance familiar foods already in our routines by boosting their protein content. Whether it’s for a snack or a meal, adding protein in this manner not only improves nutritional value but also makes it simpler to meet our daily protein needs without compromising flavor.

While the protein trend is booming, FNCE 2024 also highlighted the need for balance, keeping in mind that while protein is important, a well-rounded approach to nutrition is key to overall health.

Gut Health: The Buzzword that’s Here to Stay

Gut health isn’t just trending—it’s a critical component of overall wellness, and FNCE 2024 highlighted just how much this area has expanded. Many products featuring prebiotics and probiotics are taking center stage. We’re seeing prebiotic + probiotic sparkling beverages like Wildwonder’s Jerusalem artichoke and chicory root blend and Olipop’s gut-friendly sodas are making waves. My personal favorites: Wildwonder's Raspberry Lychee and Olipop's Ridge Rush.

Another standout was Sunsweet’s new line of fortified probiotic prunes, which already contain prebiotics naturally. After attending an insightful session on the benefits of prunes, I’ve been #prunefluenced! I’ll be adding 4-6 prunes to my daily routine for their impressive fiber content and bone health benefits. With more consumers focusing on digestive health, gut-friendly products are becoming an essential part of our daily nutrition.

Natural Sugars: A Shift Toward Healthier Sweetening

The focus on reducing added sugars in food products was front and center. Consumers are increasingly seeking out natural, whole-food alternatives, and companies are responding. I had the chance to speak with food scientists from Pepsi about their new Quaker Oats Fruit Fusion oatmeal, which contains more fruit and significantly less added sugar, making it a healthier breakfast option.

Brands like That’s It and Gogo Squeez are also promoting real fruit consumption with their fruit bars and portable fruit and veggie pouches, both of which contain zero added sugars. This trend is especially important for kids, as it helps ease the transition from processed fruit snacks to whole fruits by ensuring there’s not such a stark contrast in taste. These products are perfect for packing school lunches or taking on long road trips without worrying about spoilage—a win for both parents and kids alike!

Another brand that stood out was kencko, known for its convenient, nutrient-dense fruit and veggie smoothies with no added sugars. Their freeze-dried blends offer a simple, natural way to incorporate more produce into your day without sacrificing taste or convenience. I got to try two flavors from their instant smoothie line, "Purples" which tasted like a creamy berry smoothie and "Greens" which had more of a green juice vibe, both delicious!

Plant-Forward Protein Alternatives: A Growing Movement

FNCE 2024 reinforced the plant-based eating movement, showing that it’s no longer just a trend but a staple in modern diets. Brands Beyond Meat made an impression with their new sun sausages, spotlighting plant ingredients. I tried their Beyond Sun Sausage Pesto Penne and Spicy Avocado Beyond Burger, both so delicious! They also revamped their classic plant-based burger, now made with avocado oil and cleaner ingredients, further proof that plant-based eating continues to evolve. As the plant-based food space grows, more nutritious, tasty options are emerging, making it easier for clients to adopt a plant-forward lifestyle that supports both their health and the environment.

Next-Gen Pastas: Elevating Fiber and Gut Health

As an Italian American, I was naturally drawn to the pasta booths where several brands showcased innovative pastas designed to deliver more nutrition while supporting gut health. 3 Farm Daughters impressed with their pasta made from North Dakota-grown wheat, naturally higher in amylose, which increases resistant starch prebiotic fiber. Highlighting gut health benefits by having four times the fiber of regular pasta, 3 Farm Daughters pasta promotes the production of short-chain fatty acids, such as butyrate, in the large intestine. This process signals our natural GLP-1 hormone, helping our bodies feel fuller for longer.

Nutrition's Role in Mental Health: A Holistic Approach

The connection between diet and mental health was a central theme, with a wealth of research and discussions surrounding nutritional psychiatry. This emerging field highlights how our food choices can significantly influence our mood and overall mental well-being. Conference sessions emphasized specific nutrients, such as omega-3s, antioxidants, and polyphenols, known for their positive effects on brain health and their potential to lower the risk of mood disorders.

On the expo floor, I particularly enjoyed connecting with brands focused on omega-3-rich products, including the International Tree Nut Council Nutrition Research & Education Foundation and Safe Catch. Safe Catch is renowned for its commitment to providing high-quality, sustainably sourced seafood, specifically tuna. Their unique testing process ensures that each can contains the lowest mercury levels possible, making it a safe choice for regular consumption. Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, Safe Catch products not only support heart health but also contribute to improved cognitive function and mood regulation. With their dedication to both health and sustainability, Safe Catch exemplifies how nutrition can play a pivotal role in enhancing mental well-being. By addressing both physical and mental health goals, we can foster a more holistic approach to wellness.
